Discipleship Activities for the Family

Bringing It Home

Family faith-sharing tip:

Share your faith by talking simply and briefly about the positive differences Jesus has made to your life and by asking your friends and family warm, interesting, and thought-provoking questions.

  • John 10:10
  • Jesus helps us to understand what’s really important in our lives.

Gather together:

  • Copy paper cut into 8 to 10 slips per sheet
  • Pens/pencils
  • Perhaps some leaflets about a special place you’d like to go as a family

What you do:

  • Start a conversation about a future family outing or picnic.
  • Ask your family to help you plan it by discussing the most important things you need to think about: food, most important things to do and see when you get there, your travel arrangements, the clothes you’ll wear, treats, pocket money, first-aid kit, towels, chairs, sun screen, etc.
  • Write each thing on a separate sheet of paper. Then have your family help you decide which are the most important things to help you have a good day out. Arrange them in order from the most important to the least important.
  • If something seems out of order to you, warmly help them to consider the implications of their choices.
  • Set a date for doing this fun family activity.
  • Then repeat the list-making activity, but this time think about your lives, and what’s most important to you: being kind, sharing, wearing fashionable clothes, making others happy, earning money, passing exams, being popular, living in a nice house, etc.
  • Encourage your children to think about the values behind their choices as they arrange them in order.
  • Give each person time to talk about how they created their personal value list and how they decided what was most important.
  • Explain that some wise and influential people decide what’s most important today by asking themselves what will still be important in 10 years’ time.
  • When you read your own list, look for ways to share how knowing Jesus has helped you to look at your own values in a different way and see what’s most important in your life.

Prayer/reflection activity:

  • Give everyone a sheet of paper and have them write or draw a special goal that they have for their life.
  • When everyone has finished, pass the papers around the circle.
  • Write or draw one thing on each person’s paper that you would like to do to help them reach their goal.
  • If your family is comfortable praying, place the papers in the middle of your group and ask each person to pray that God will help the person on their left to reach their own goal, as well as God’s goal, for them.
  • Otherwise, say something encouraging and uplifting to each person about their goal.
