Seventh-day Adventists have been known for their comprehensive and preventive health for more than a century. What does religion have to do with health? Well, Adventists believe that religious belief system can promote health by providing a sense of meaning and purpose and feelings of strength to cope with stress and adversity that enable many individuals to get through some of the tough times in life. Religion has also been shown to have positive, protective effects for multiple measures of mental health. Studies have found that religiousness is associated with fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety; less suicidal behavior; lower levels of substance abuse and mood and anxiety disorders; and more positive psychological well-being.

The basis of all these endeavors is the recognition of the existence of eight free natural remedies, available to all people. There are eight general principles on how to develop and maintain a better physical, emotional and spiritual life. In, Romans 12:1-2, the Bible tells us “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Adventists understood this message as, “The quality of life should not be sought only for longevity or momentary well-being, but also to further strengthen a closer and binding relationship between the creatures and their Creator and Originator of life”.
